2022 Antica Cantina Leonardi – “Pensiero” Grechetto – Lazio IGT

Antica Cantina Leonardi, a family-run winery rooted in the heart of Lazio, continues to embody tradition and authenticity in every bottle. My February 2023 visit with The Wine Voyager offered a first-hand look at their meticulous vineyard management and gentle, low-intervention winemaking philosophy, where respect for the land and grape typicity guide each step. The “Pensiero” is crafted from 100% Grechetto, a native white variety prized in Central Italy for its structure, aromatics, and capacity to convey terroir.

In the glass, the wine shows a bright straw-yellow hue with greenish highlights, hinting at its youth and freshness. On the nose, delicate white peach, pear, and acacia blossom emerge first, followed by subtle notes of wild herbs and almond—a classic Grechetto signature. A faint saline edge reflects the mineral-rich soils of the Lazio hills.

The palate is dry, medium-bodied, and well-balanced, with a lively acidity that frames flavors of crisp apple, citrus zest, and a touch of chamomile. The texture is pleasantly rounded, yet retains an elegant freshness that makes it both gastronomic and versatile. The finish is clean, slightly almond-driven, and persistently mineral.

Serving suggestion: Excellent with grilled Mediterranean fish, seafood risotto, or fresh pecorino cheese. This 2022 vintage showcases Grechetto’s ability to combine character, finesse, and regional authenticity.
