2023 Fattoria Pagano “Gaurasi” — Falerno del Massico Rosso DOP
Campania, Italy | Aglianico 80% / Piedirosso 20% | Aged 18 months in stainless steel
Background
The name “Gaurasi” is a tribute to the Aurasi area within the ancient Falernum appellation at the slopes of Monte Massico in Campania — one of the earliest wine regions in history, praised by the Ancient Romans for the excellence of its Falerno. The blend is composed of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso, with the 2023 vintage receiving 91/100 and 5 Stars in the Vinoway Selection 2026 edition.
Appearance
Deep ruby red in the glass, with a vivid garnet core and a rim that shows the wine’s youthful vibrancy. Good viscosity on the swirl suggests a wine of substance.
Nose
Seductive and elegant, with complex aromas of red fruits, black cherry, and plum. The fruit character is pure, accompanied by notes of pepper — the hallmark spice of Aglianico in volcanic soils. Subtle earthy undertones weave through, adding depth and a sense of place.
Palate
The palate presents an enveloping structure with soft tannins, a delicate texture, and a very long finish in which an elegant mineral freshness prevails, alongside balsamic and spicy notes. The result is a dry yet balanced sip, shaped in part by a slight on-vine drying of the Aglianico grapes — a technique that concentrates character without sacrificing freshness. The acidity is lively and well-integrated, lending the wine excellent tension and persistence.
Finish
Long and mineral, with lingering echoes of dried herbs, dark spice, and wild berry. A wine that rewards patience in the glass.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs well with beef, pasta, and lamb. More specifically, consider slow-braised short ribs, ragù napoletano, roasted lamb with rosemary, or aged Southern Italian cheeses such as Caciocavallo Silano. PM 89
