Castel de Paolis – Campo Vecchio 2017 (Lazio IGT)
Producer: Castel de Paolis
Region: Lazio, Italy
Vintage: 2017
Blend: Predominantly international varieties (typically Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot)
Alcohol: ~14%
Visual:
Deep, impenetrable ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, indicating early tertiary evolution. Excellent viscosity, forming slow, dense tears.
Nose:
Intense and layered. Opens with ripe black fruit—blackberry, cassis, and plum compote—followed by tertiary notes of tobacco leaf, leather, and sweet spices. Well-integrated oak contributes nuances of vanilla, cocoa, and a subtle balsamic lift. With aeration, hints of Mediterranean herbs and graphite emerge, adding complexity and typicity.
Palate:
Full-bodied, structured, and harmoniously developed. The tannins are firm yet refined, now partially resolved with age. The fruit remains generous and ripe, balanced by a fresh acidity that maintains vibrancy despite the warm vintage. Flavors mirror the nose, with added notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and a touch of licorice.
Finish:
Long, persistent, and elegant. A lingering combination of dark fruit, spice, and savory undertones, with a slightly mineral edge.
Overall Impression:
A mature and expressive Lazio red that showcases the successful integration of international varieties within a Mediterranean terroir. The 2017 vintage—marked by heat and concentration—delivers richness without sacrificing balance. This wine is now entering a very appealing drinking window but has the structure to evolve further over the next 5–8 years.
Food Pairing:
• Braised beef or lamb shank
• Wild boar ragù
• Aged pecorino or caciocavallo
• Grilled meats with herb seasoning
Service:
• Temperature: 16–18°C
• Decanting: Recommended (30–60 minutes) to allow full aromatic expression
