FALERNO DEL MASSICO 2013 Villa Matilde

Paolo Mittiga

The wine is Falerno del Massico from Villa Matilde 2013. Falerno was the Gran Cru from the Roman Empire. It was and it’s produced in the Caserta province in the Campania region. It’s a blend with Aglianico and Piedirosso; the ubiquitous grapes from Campania. We visited Villa Matilde winery in September 2018. The color is dark ruby and the core it’s not true to the rim; showing bottle aging; we tested it well in its 7th year. The viscosity is medium with (13.5% abv). The nose is really appealing, intense and complex with notes of dark fruit, black cherries, blackberries and a tertiary notes of dark chocolate. The palate confirms the nose with a full body medium acidity smooth tannins ( the aging has helped ) long persistence. In summary a truly great wine 🍷 a perfect pairing with grilled meat ( the way we paired it) and grilled vegetable but also great as meditation wine in the winter in front a roaring fire. PM: 92.
