Romanelli Medeo 2012 Montefalco Sagrantino

Wine: Romanelli “Medeo” Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG

Vintage: 2012

Grape Variety: 100% Sagrantino

Region: Umbria, Italy

Producer: Azienda Agricola Romanelli

Tasting Notes:

Appearance:

Deep garnet core with a ruby rim, showing significant concentration and slow, persistent legs in the glass—signaling both maturity and high extraction.

Nose:

A powerful and complex bouquet opens with dark forest fruits—black cherry, dried blackberry, and plum preserves—evolving into more tertiary aromas of tobacco leaf, leather, balsamic reduction, and dark chocolate. Subtle hints of wild herbs, licorice, and black pepper add a distinctive earthy-spicy backbone, typical of aged Sagrantino.

Palate:

Full-bodied and firmly structured, the wine offers muscular yet refined tannins that have mellowed with age but still grip assertively. The mid-palate is layered with flavors of dried black fruits, espresso, cloves, and a touch of iron minerality. A vibrant acidity keeps the wine lively and well-balanced despite its power and depth. The finish is long and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fig, cocoa, and savory spice.

Maturity & Aging Potential:

Now at peak maturity, the 2012 “Medeo” shows the varietal’s hallmark strength with a well-integrated structure. It can still evolve in bottle for another 3–5 years, but is drinking beautifully now with proper decanting.

Food Pairing Suggestions:

Pairs exceptionally with braised wild boar, aged pecorino, grilled lamb chops, or hearty lentil stews. Also a meditative wine to enjoy on its own after a meal.PM 93
