2022 La Sibilla | Falanghina Domus Giulii | Campania IGT
Producer: La Sibilla | Grape: Falanghina dei Campi Flegrei 100%
Region: Campi Flegrei, Campania, Italy | ABV: 12.5%
Provenance & Viticulture
The Domus Giulii is crafted from pure Falanghina dei Campi Flegrei grapes, selected from the Domus vineyard, situated close to the Roman residence of Caesar Augustus. The Campi Flegrei lies just north of Naples on the coast of Campania, where the soil is so sandy that vines can be planted directly in it without being grafted onto rootstock — an extraordinary characteristic that lends these wines a distinctly singular personality. The grapes are harvested by hand in wicker containers with selection carried out in the vineyard, followed by vinification in stainless steel and maturation on fine lees for six months, with an additional year of bottle refinement prior to release.
Appearance
The wine presents a bright, light yellow colour with alluring greenish reflections — hallmarks of a young, carefully handled white with excellent freshness preserved through its reductive winemaking approach.
Nose
The nose expresses an intense bouquet of yellow peach, ripe pineapple, dried fig and date, mature flowers, sage, Mediterranean scrubland, and green pepper. Underlying these fruit-driven layers, a reductive, flinty quality is characteristic of the La Sibilla house style , adding complexity and a compelling tension between richness and restraint.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is fresh and mineral, with marked acidity and a long, persistent finish. The profile is lean and sharp in the best way — a bone-dry frame with volcanic saltiness and a taut, searing quality that drives energy from start to finish. The mid-weight body carries flavours of grapefruit pith, citrus peel, and stone fruit, underpinned by a saline minerality that is the unmistakable signature of Campi Flegrei’s volcanic soils.
Style & Structure
This is a severe, uncompromising wine with excellent length and depth — not immediately approachable in the conventional sense, but deeply rewarding for those who appreciate structured, terroir-driven whites. The wine is rated as medium-high in body and sapidity, with pronounced freshness and moderate softness , reflecting the high-tension balance that defines the Domus Giulii style.
Food Pairing
An excellent seafood wine, it also performs beautifully as a dry aperitif alongside olives and cured meats. It is equally at home with grilled branzino, spaghetti alle vongole, or Neapolitan fried fish.
Summary
The 2022 Domus Giulii is a textbook expression of volcanic Campanian white winemaking — precise, saline, and mineral-driven, with an austere elegance that rewards patience. A wine of genuine character and a compelling ambassador for the ancient Falanghina grape of Campi Flegrei. PM 86
